Hypnotically charismatic and alluringly androgynous, French singer/performer Fishbach has just released her debut album, A ta merci in North America. Heravant-garde pop music has made a deep impression in France and all across Europe and is not impacting North America with praise from Angel Olsen, KEXP, Gorilla Vs Bear and more.
Born Flora Fischbach in Charleville-Mézières, France, Fishbach left school when she was still a teenager, working various odd jobs to get by. After playing in several bands, she started writing her own material – and recording her first demos, using only a laptop, a cheap microphone and a battered Fender Telecaster. But it was her compelling live performance, that took her from her bedroom to being one of France’s most promising acts within a single year. The young singer’s voice is one of surprise and sensuality, which instantly sets itself apart from the norm.
Her song ‘Un Autre Que Moi’, is a dark electronic hit that pays homage to French poet Rimbaud (‘Je Est Un Autre’). ‘Y Crois-Tu’ is much more anthemic, drawing influence from the likes of Beach House and Au Revoir Simone. ‘Invisible Désintégration De L’univers’ demonstrates Fishbach’s ability to write highly intelligent, counterpoint tracks that are sure to stand the test of time. It’s as if Ray Manzarek of the Doors were playing synth in a band put together by LCD Soundsystem, while Freddie Mercury (circa ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’) sings the harmonies.
Videos for tracks “Mortel” and “Eternité” are out now.
“…darkly mysterious and danceably funky new synth-pop” – Gorilla Vs Bear
“…dark, imaginative, and transgressive” – The Line of Best Fit
“She has a beautiful voice and writes catchy hooks” – KEXP
