Songs From Montague Terrace (A Tribute To Scott Walker)

Songs from Montague Terrace - A Tribute to Scott Walker

All Souls

September 16th 1967 – Scott Walker releases his first solo album.

Described as his ‘obsession’, it marks the beginning of one of the most unique solo recording and writing careers in music history.

Almost half a century on, Scott’s music is as powerful as ever and continues to reach each new generation as they discover his vast range of work from the orchestral melancholy of his 60’s albums to the stark and confronting sound world of new albums The Drift & Bish Bosch.

Now, some of the world’s biggest Scott Walker fans have teamed up to record some of their favourite tracks as part of the Songs from Montague Terrace compilation released September 16th on the anniversary of his landmark first solo album ‘Scott’.

The collection includes new recordings from artists including Norwegian singer/songwriter Sondre Lerche, the first new studio release in three years from former Acid Bath front man Dax Riggs, Nightlands, rising British stars Eugene McGuinness, Bright Light Bright Light, and talented new bands like Coves & Invisible Familiars (who have toured the U.S & Europe with Martha Wainwright, Yoko Ono & Cibo Matto – who feature on their contribution to the album).

Sondre Lerche’s take on the classic 1967 Walker B-side ‘The Plague’ is the world’s first taste of the new compilation.

“In the late 60’s Scott Walker brought confusion, dissonance and shame into the pop game he had come of age in.” says Lerche. “It’s still so rare to hear a voice of such natural masculinity convey apprehension and vulnerability like that.”

Recorded in his native Norway, Lerche has produced a tribute to Walker that is both respectful and original. “I’ve always loved ‘The Plague’. The original recording has so many iconic little details in terms of use of reverb, echo and dissonance. It may be pointless to cover, but it’s my absolute favourite of his and so it would seem disingenuous to not dare do it. I wanted to keep it simple and compact, but build it around this immense drum sound we were able to achieve by recording in a huge parking garage at the old wharf where we recorded the song in my home town, Bergen. I’ve referenced this song many times when I’ve been recording my own records, trying to indicate a specific type of sound or aesthetics, so it seemed reasonable that I participate on this album by performing The Plague.”

Fans will also be given the chance to share their own tributes to Scott Walker, using social media to share their tribute with fans all over the world. Prizes are up for offer for winners selected by a panel of judges and fans on Scott Walker’s Facebook fan page at http://bit.ly/scott_ .
